PTO Minutes for February 15, 2018

PTO Minutes for February 15, 2018

In attendance were Mr. Sylvia, President Kenda Coulter, VP Sarah Wood, Treasurer Anthony Greenwood, Secretary of Communications Trina Ruggiero, Citywide Rep. Dave Blaton, and assembled parents.

Kenda: Big thanks to Wendy Francis for organizing Pennies for Patients. We have surpassed the amount of money we raised last year.

Mr. Sylvia: Brand new Chrome Book cart with 18 Chrome Books on it is now at the school with 15 more being ordered. This will allow a whole grade to be able to test on computers in one day. Grade 4 will do a practice MCAS online. Next year, grades 3-5 will be testing online too. Mrs. Corwin says thank you to PTO for helping to get everything they needed for the kindergarten 100th day. Great Dragon parade for Chinese New Year. A few student council members are being sent to the leadership summit on 3/8. Parent conferences will be 4/3 during the day and night and 4/10 during the day. 4/10 is also Math & Science night followed by a PTO meeting. Grade specific letters for MCAS testing dates will be sent home. Just to give you an idea…week of 4/9: ELA, week of 5/14: math, week of 5/21: grade 5 science. Read across America will begin when we return from Feb break. The Squantum School Players show will be in the evening on 3/8. They will also perform at 9am on 3/9 for anyone who cannot make the evening performance.

Dave’s Citywide Report: Other schools were talking about how they run their book fairs. They also discussed if photos from picture day can be looked at online before ordering instead of ordering pics you aren’t happy with without seeing them. Citywide is also working on getting rid of the Yakoo symbol for NQ High.

Sarah: Disney Raffle: talked about how many tickets to start each kid off with…possibly 15 this time. This will start after St.Patrick’s Day and run until around April 6. Still deciding on prizes for top sellers, etc.

Anthony: Accounts pretty much stand where they did at our last meeting. Amazon money from affiliate marketing has started being deposited.

The rest of the meeting consisted of an excellent presentation from a representative from Boston vs Bullies. He talked about and showed a Power Point slide show on how to recognize and handle if your child is being bullied.

Docent Art – volunteer today

Docent Art: Reminder to parent volunteers. Check the Signup Genius schedule for openings then reach out to the classroom teacher to schedule your day and time. Kids love Docent Art! Don’t let your students class miss out.
It’s never too late to volunteer for Docent Art.
What is Docent Art? Parents bring digital images of works of art (provided by program director) to elementary classrooms and conduct discussions on the works. You don’t have to be an art expert only willing to talk with kids about what they see, what it makes them think of or what it reminds them of. It’s fun for adults and students.

PTO Meeting: Nov. Minutes- Jan. 9th next meeting

No December PTO meeting. Next meeting is tentatively set for January 9.

PTO Meeting Minutes…11/16/17

In attendance were Mr. Sylvia, Dr. Bloom, President Kenda Coulter, VP Sarah Wood, Treasurer Anthony Greenwood, Secretary of Communications Trina Ruggiero & assembled parents.

Mr. Sylvia’s report: Parent conferences will be 12/12 & 12/19. 12/12 will be the date that has both evening and afternoon appointments. Printed report cards will go home 12/8. Big thanks to Jen Bergin and family for the flags in our front lawn for Veteran’s Day. With all the donations that were given, there were gift cards purchased and donated to Veterans. The Veteran’s Day assembly featured Bruce Ayers speaking to the students about Veteran’s Affairs. The 5th graders did a walkathon at Creedon Field with some veterans.

A small subcommittee (Kenda, Paul, & Mr. Sylvia) discussed technology and what the best way to spend the earnings from the fun run (chrome books, projectors, etc.).

We had a very successful canned food drive!

Kindergarten was the grade with the most fun run pledges so they will have a smoothie party thanks to the wellness team. Officer Hartnett will drive Raylee Gunter and two friends to school. Raylee had the most fun run pledges over Columbus Day weekend.

Tuesday 11/21 will be the Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast.
Read Across America (first week in March), will feature an assembly called “I Love to Read”. We voted to fund this at this PTO meeting.

Upcoming dates:
Tis the Season Symphony & Song: 12/11 (Granite Electric has donated a limited number of tickets for students).
Conferences: 12/12 & 12/19
Polar Express: 12/14
Winter concert: 12/15

Anthony reported that we had a very successful bake sale raising almost $1,800.

Kenda: Theme for next year’s fun run is Mind Spark. We voted to use the same company for next year’s fun run at this PTO meeting. Other companies were looked into and the cost/percentages were the same.

PBIS is looking to put up signage with inspirational messages for the students.

Paul: Talked about applying for affiliate marketing. This would allow companies (for example: Amazon), put ads or banners on our site or emails. If parents do a click through on these banners, we would receive a percentage of the profit that the company receives from it.

Dave’s citywide report: Dave wasn’t present at this meeting but Kenda shared an email that he sent her. At the citywide meeting, they discussed pros and cons of elected school committee members. They also discussed a pending state bill that would increase recess time by 20 minutes. Also discussed an organization called Visions Incorporated which visits high schools and middle schools to talk about empathy, diversity, acceptance.
No December PTO meeting. Next meeting is tentatively set for January 9.
